Nothing more satisfying than these Air Fryer Crispy Nian Gao Wraps! Each bite comes with a guaranteed crunch, with oozy melted Nian Gao, accompanied by Sweet Potato and Taro. Before I dwelve into the recipe, let me share more about what’s Nian Gao!
Nian Gao (年糕)is a traditonal southeast asian food which we eat during the Lunar / Chinese New Year. It symbolises for good fortune, prosperity and a better year ahead. While I do like my Nian Gao, I absolutely like it air fried for that extra ooze and to have it warm. Hence, presenting to you these delicious Air Fryer Crispy Nian Gao Wraps! Psssst… I absolutely like them for being sweet and savoury!

Before starting, it’s important to consider what you would like to use to complement your Nian Gao Wraps. For myself, I chose Taro and Sweet Potato as they are healthy and nice complements to the really sweet Nian Gao. However, you can consider other options such as radish, or even to have it with just Nian Gao and be all indulgent!
If there is something I would change about how I’ve done these, it is definitely to use a sprinkle of sesame seeds for that extra nutty aroma.
Now what are the others things you need?
- Wrap
Food wraps or pastry sheets will do the job just right! My preference was to go towards a flour-based wrap as they are more nutritious while giving the same crunch. Furthermore, pastry sheets can get overly flaky. - Condiments
Consider the usage of sesame seeds, toasted coconuts or even a sprinkle of sea salt for a finishing touch! These will add a depth of flavour to this simple dish while enhancing the flavours altogether.
Otherwise, all you are left with is to have an Air Fryer! It works well deep fried as well but I thought air frying is such a good alternative as it uses less oil while delivering the same crunch.
Without further ado, the recipe!
