Is it possible to have healthier pineapple tarts? The answer is yes you can! Presenting to you my Wholegrain Low Sugar Pineapple Tarts. My inspiration for these healthier pineapple tarts stem from both lifestyle changes and the growing interest in healthier bakes.

For these Wholegrain Low Sugar Pineapple Tarts, the name has it! Not only are the crust one-third wholegrain, but there is also a much lower sugar content. Furthermore, you can reduce the amount of sugar by preparing your own pineapple jam.

How do the taste and flavour measure up as compared to your usual pineapple tarts?

For these healthier pineapple tarts, they are slightly coarser due to the use of wholegrain flour. However, it is still melt in your mouth and you won’t exactly feel it. Nonetheless, you can also substitute the coarser wholegrain flour for a finer wholemeal flour. The reason why I used wholegrain (versus wholemeal) is because of its higher dietary fibre with a lower glycaemic index (GI).

Taste-wise, these healthier pineapple tarts are slightly different and in a good way. I like how these are less sweet and how the wholegrain flour provides an earthier finish. Furthermore, the pineapple jam complements this slight earthiness really well!

Overall, I would say that these healthier pineapple tarts are slightly different and they do shine in their own way!

Additionally, these Wholegrain Low Sugar Pineapple tarts are pretty straightforward to make, so do check out the video below!

These Wholegrain Low Sugar Pineapple Tarts are fragrant, delicious, and healthier! Comes with more vitamins and dietary fibre too!

For Tarts:

  • 1 Cup or 225g of Unsalted Butter, Softened at Room Temp
  • Approx 3 Tbspns + 1 Tspn or 40g of Granulated White Sugar
  • One large egg, approx 55g, weighed inclusive of shell
  • 1 Tspn or 5ml of Vanilla Essence
  • 1 and 1/3 Cup or 240g of Plain Flour
  • 1/2 Cup or 100g of Wholegrain Flour
  • Approx 450g – 500g of Pineapple Paste Filling

For Egg Wash:

  • One large egg, approx 55g, weighed inclusive of shell

  1. Prepare your pineapple paste balls for easier and faster assembly. I made 10g pineapple balls!
  2. Cream together softened butter and sugar until it forms a single consistency.
  3. Then, whisk in the egg and vanilla.
  4. Next, stir in the flour and wholegrain flour until the batter comes together.
  5. Then, stretch 14g of dough until its thin and wrap around the pineapple paste ball (I am using 10g). Roll it well into a ball or shape it according to your liking.
  6. Next, apply the egg wash substitute. Be sure not to only apply to the top and do not let it drip or the base will be sticky after baking.
  7. Bake at 180 degrees C for about 14 to 16 mins on baking paper until it’s golden brown. Timing is for 16 pineapple tarts and will take longer / shorter depending on the quantity used.
  8. Serve and enjoy!
