These Steamed Strawberry Cupcakes are soft and gently sweet, with a little swirl of whipped cream and fresh strawberries to finish. They’re a lovely afternoon treat, especially if you enjoy a lighter topping on your cupcakes!
Instead of baking, these cupcakes are cooked in a steamer. The batter comes together with a whisk and spatula, without creaming butter or separating eggs. Just remember to let the cupcakes cool completely before decorating, otherwise, the whipped cream will melt.

Why You’ll Love these Cupcakes
- Simple presentation and method: No butter creaming or egg separation required. You can get the entire batch done within the hour!
- Steamed instead of baked: A useful recipe to try with your everyday steamer or when giving your oven a break!
- Delicate flavour: Strawberry milk gives the cupcakes a gentle, milky flavour, complemented by fresh strawberries and a strawberry jam filling.
- Easy to personalise: Decorate with cream or other decorations as you deem fit!
Tips Before You Start
- Support your cupcake liners. Regular thin paper liners need to sit inside heatproof metal or silicone moulds to hold their shape. Use moulds that fit comfortably inside your steamer, with space between them for steam to circulate.
- Prepare the steamer before mixing. The batter should go into the staemer promptly. If you need to cook in two batches (like I did), try to do so immediately after the first batch is done.
- Watch for condensation. Watr dripping from the lid can leave wet patches on the surface. If wrapping the lid with a cloth, secure it firmly and keep the fabric away from the heat source.
